Adult Fluoride Treatment

A professional fluoride treatment helps defend your teeth against acid attacks caused by the plaque bacteria that feed on the sugars in your mouth.  Additionally this professional treatment can also help slow and even reverse the early stages of tooth decay.

We recommend a fluoride treatment for all adults every six months but especially if you have the following:

Dry Mouth

Dry mouth is most often caused by medications or illness. The lack of saliva makes it harder to wash away food particles and neutralize the acid in your mouth, putting teeth at greater risk for cavities.

Gum Disease

Gum disease will typically expose more of your tooth and tooth roots to bacteria increasing the chance of tooth decay.

Recent History of Cavities

If you have had a cavity within the last 12-24 months, you would likely benefit from a professional fluoride treatment to help prevent new cavities from forming.

Protect Existing Dental Work

Some dental treatment such as crowns and bridges put teeth at a greater risk for decay at the junction where the crown meets the underlying tooth structure. Fluoride is a great way to help protect the investment you have made in your oral health.

Snack Frequently

If you snack frequently or enjoy sugary soda and foods, a fluoride treatment is a great way to help protect your teeth from the negative effects sugar can have on your smile.

What’s involved in a professional fluoride treatment?

After a cleaning your dental hygienist will simply apply the fluoride with a small brush. The process from start to finish only takes about 2-3 minutes.

How long should I wait to eat or drink after my fluoride treatment?

Avoid eating and drinking for an hour and avoid hot drinks for at least 4-6 hours after treatment. Additionally avoid brushing or flossing for at least 4-6 hours after your fluoride treatment.
