Dentophobia is nothing new and is one of the most common phobias ranking right up there along with fears about public speaking, heights and flying. Whether or not the cause of our fears is rational or the product of some long buried trauma varies from person to person but one thing is certain, pet therapy can greatly help relax a nervous or anxious patient.
In dentistry, dogs are the preferred animal because of the strong physiological effects on humans when they pet dogs. Study after study has shown that there is a drop in blood pressure, heart rhythm and cortisol while simultaneously increasing dopamine and oxytocin levels.
Say Hello to Our Resident Therapy Dog (In-Training), Mischa!

Mischa soaks up all that dental fear and brings nothing but cheer! She’s another hard working health care provider taking care of our patients.
When is dog therapy recommended at Cornerstone Dental?
Have a fear of needles? This is one of the most common fears at the dental office and petting a dog while you get numb helps to lower the heart rate and anxiety that comes along with receiving an anesthetic injection.
Children having dental procedures. One of our goals at Cornerstone Dental is to ensure that children have a positive experience with us. It’s not surprising how the joy of a dog puts a child at ease. Since many children associate dogs with fun, having a dog in the office helps make their trip to the dental office more positive and enjoyable.
Children with autism. The calmness and affection of a dog can often times help an autistic child know that he or she is in a safe space.
Because you want to! Let’s face it sometimes it just feels nice to have a dog in your lap to make your visit a little nicer.
When is dog therapy not recommended?
There are some procedures that require us to have a completely sterile field and so naturally no dogs are allowed when those types of procedures are being performed.
