September has arrived and before you know it Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s will be here. If your dental insurance plan is on a calendar year, here are 5 good reasons you should make an appointment at the dentist office before you ring in 2018.
1) Yearly Maximum
Your yearly maximum is the most money that your dental insurance plan will pay for any eligible dental services you receive within one full year. While the yearly maximum varies from insurance to insurance, most yearly maximums typically range between $1,000 to $1,500 per person, per year. The yearly maximum on most plans resets every year on January 1st and if you have any unused benefits they do not rollover to the following year, so be sure to “use them before you lose them.”.
2) Deductible
Your deductible is the amount of money that you must pay out of pocket before your dental insurance company will pay for any dental procedures. Deductibles vary between different insurance providers but the average deductible ranges between $50 to $100 every year. Similar to your yearly maximum your deductible resets every year when your plan rolls over.
3) Monthly Premiums
If you are paying your dental insurance premiums every month, you should at the very least use your benefits for your regular 6 month cleanings and exams. Even if you don’t usually require dental treatment, having your regularly scheduled 6 month cleaning and exam will help prevent and detect dental problems earlier. Like other medical concerns the earlier we catch a problem the easier and less expensive it is to treat.
4) Fee Increases
Another reason to use your dental benefits before the end of the year is due to possible fee increases. Every year most dentists have to reevaluate their fee schedules and adjust their fees due to the increases for materials and equipment for dental suppliers.
5) Dental Problems Will Worsen
When regular dental cleanings are postponed or recommended treatment neglected patients often put themselves at a higher risk for more extensive and expensive treatments down the road. What is a simple cavity now can easily turn into a root canal in as little as 6 months.
