My Teeth are Discolored

Tooth discoloration can be caused by a multitude of things, including surface stains or by changes inside of the tooth. The main types of tooth discoloration can be broken down into three main categories.

Extrinsic discoloration happens when the outer layer of your tooth enamel becomes stained from eating, drinking or smoking. Liquids like coffee, wine and soda are the most common agents of enamel stains.

Intrinsic discoloration of the tooth happens when inner tooth structure causes darkened or yellow tinting of the tooth. Too much exposure to fluoride, certain antibiotics and dental trauma during childhood can often times create this type of of discoloration.

Age-related stains are a combination of extrinsic and intrinsic factors that can alter tooth color. As we age, our enamel gets thinner, which allows the dentin inside of our teeth to show through. Foods and use of tobacco products also stain teeth as we age.

Can it be fixed?

Most tooth discoloration that comes from everyday activity (liquid based stains from coffee or wine) can be removed by simply having a dental cleaning procedure. For stains that are more permanent, Cornerstone offers advanced teeth whitening and bleaching services to remove minor stains and crowns or veneers for more sever discoloration.

How can I prevent stains?

Of course, brushing your teeth after every meal will help minimize stains, but that is not always realistic. We recommend rinsing your mouth with water after you drink coffee, wine, sugary drinks or ingest foods that can stain your teeth. Swishing will help you remove residue until you can brush your teeth.

In addition, making sure you get to the dentist every 6 months for your cleaning and checkup will ensure you prevent severe stains and other dental problems.
